Craft lighthearted copy that would be amusing if read, but not super informative.
Given that direct messaging is a common feature, people will skip over any informative copy. Instead, I thought the empty state could be an opportunity to inject some brand voice.
Most empty states that a user will come across in their daily life are empty email inboxes or to-do lists. But unlike those, an empty DM can feel a bit depressing — like damn, no one likes me :(
With that in mind, the copy goal was to leave users with a feeling of encouragement, to message someone they enjoy! Additionally I was hoping the conversational tone felt a bit like a DM itself, so the “empty” state wouldn’t feel so lonely.
